Forty hectares of instrumented quiet.
The institute was built around a single constraint: measurement this precise cannot happen anywhere noisy. Every laboratory on the campus is isolated, climate-locked and calibrated on a fixed annual cycle.
Six laboratories, one calibration cycle.
Each facility is isolated from the others and recalibrated on the same fixed annual schedule, so a measurement taken in Wing A in March is comparable to one taken in Wing B in November.

Computational Neural Dynamics Laboratory
High-dimensional manifold modelling of working memory and fluid logic. Houses the sixty-node compute cluster that recalculates the global norming surface every night.

Psychometric Norming Suite
Where every item in the battery earns its place. Difficulty, discrimination and pseudo-guessing parameters are estimated here under a three-parameter logistic model before an item is ever shown to a participant.

Anechoic Response Chamber
A room with no echo and no clock. Reaction-latency work is done at the bottom of the building because a measurement in milliseconds cannot tolerate a passing vehicle.

The Reading Room & Archive
Four decades of norming records, held on paper as well as disk. The 1973 founding study is still on the shelf, in the hand of the person who ran it.

Symposium Hall
Four hundred and fifty seats, raked steeply enough that everyone can see the board. Hosts the annual International Symposium on Computational Cognitive Dynamics.

Apparatus Workshop
Response pads, tachistoscopes and rotation rigs are built here rather than bought. Off-the-shelf hardware introduces its own latency, and we would rather know the number.

Fifty-three years of continuous measurement.
The institute has never stopped norming. Every entry below changed how a score is arrived at — and the archive still holds the paper from the first one.
- 1973
The institute is founded
The first norming study runs with 1,120 participants and a stopwatch.
- 1981
Wing A opens
The anechoic chamber is commissioned, and reaction latency becomes measurable to the millisecond.
- 1994
First adaptive battery
Item selection moves from a fixed sequence to a difficulty-following algorithm.
- 2003
Cross-cultural invariance programme
Verbal items are retired entirely in favour of non-verbal matrices.
- 2011
One million assessments
The norming database passes seven figures and moves to nightly recalculation.
- 2019
Fluid logic mapping published
Response trajectory, not just response, becomes part of the reported profile.
- 2026
Standard V4.2
Global benchmarks published across 140 nations at 0.962 reliability.

Visiting the institute
The campus is open to fellows, invited researchers and symposium delegates. Public access is limited to the Reading Room and the East Pavilion, by appointment.
